Build Camp

YAKIMA VALLEY

Blessed with three hundred days of sunshine each year, the Yakima Valley is the perfect destination to experience a Habitat Build Camp! Why choose Yakima Valley for your volunteer experience? It’s quite simple. We are centrally located in Washington State, so getting here is easy. Once you arrive, let the entice begin!

Are you an outdoor adventurer? This is one of the few places in Central Washington where you can ski, bike, hike, and golf, all on the same day. How about produce and farms? With more than forty commercial crops, we have the largest variety of freshly grown produce in the Pacific Northwest.

Enjoy the sunshine while you handpick your own fruit or stroll through one of the many Farmers markets. As far as hops and beer, the volcanic soil and long, hot days make the Yakima Valley the ideal place to grow hops.

We proudly produce over 75% of our nation’s hops. Our wine country is a rewarding and unique experience, with over 120 wineries we proudly produce over half of Washington State’s wine grapes.

How it Works

Priority is given to the last year’s build camps. They may elect to “keep” the week that they worked during the previous year. After January 1st, all weeks that haven’t been reserved by returning camps are available! Build weeks are typically one weeklong, with 5 work days and one extra day for each arrival and departure.

The maximum size for a build camp is 25, including both youth and adults on site. We will provide work and a wonderful experience for up to 25 participants on site. Members of your group need to be at least 16 years old. Habitat cannot be responsible for the supervision of young children under 16 years old on the job site.

Build camps are suggested to bring a ratio of at least one professional carpenter or contractor for every seven volunteers. the size of the group may be reduced if the appropriate number of skilled professionals is not available. If your group consists of high school students, you will also need an adult counselor for every seven teens.

The Volunteer Coordinator at Habitat will make the arrangements for your group to stay at a “Host Church” which will provide a place to stow gear, cool meals and rest up after the workday. Some churches have showers if they do not a second site for showers will be arranged.

It should be noted that we are often working on more than one job site at a time. Depending on the size of your group and the number of work sites, you may not all be assigned to the same work site. The smaller number of group members the greater the chance to have an awesome experience all working together. Because the cities/towns in Yakima Valley are spread out (our service area is Prosser to Yakima). your group may have to drive to reach the job site(s).

For Yakima Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity to ensure a productive build camp, it is necessary for your group to contribute 150 Dollars per person per week for all participants. This will help to pay the construction and administrative costs. Please send at least half of your contribution two weeks before arriving. Your food and transportation costs are in addition to the 150 Dollars per person in-kind donation.
