The three criteria used by Habitat to select families are: 1. Need You will be considered for a Habitat home if you demonstrate “need” determined by:
a. Health & Safety: Your present housing in the Yakima County or Prosser area is not adequate, and you are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include problems with the present structure: water, electrical or sewage service systems: heating system; or failure to meet city property maintenance standards.
b. Overcrowding: The number, ages, and the sex of children compared to the number of bedrooms in your home is disproportionate as defined by Habitat for Humanity.
c. Financial Burden:* You spend more than 30% of your monthly income on housing and your total income is less than 60% of the county median family income using 2006 figures. For example:
2. Ability to Pay
Since you will actually be buying your home from Habitat, you must demonstrate your ability to pay the monthly mortgage payment AND that you have paid your bills in the past. This payment will include not only the mortgage payment, but the payment for real estate taxes and insurance. We will help you to determine if this payment will jeopardize your ability to meet all your other family financial obligations and expenses. We can also help you if you need to develop a budget to determine eligibility.
3. Willingness to Partner
When selected you become a “partner family” in the Habitat movement. To become a “partner family” you:
a. Must complete 500 hours of volunteer work with Habitat, otherwise referred to as “sweat equity,” before becoming a homeowner. These hours are earned, primarily, by assisting in the construction your home and other Habitat homes. Other opportunities for earning sweat hours include, providing food for volunteers, working in the Habitat office, etc.
b. Must attend Habitat Homeowner classes which usually include: Habitat 101, Budget & Finances, Legal Aspects of Habitat, Home Care & Safety, Lawn & Gardening, etc. (By attending these required classes you will also earn sweat equity hours.)
c. Will be responsible for maintenance and repairs of your house from the time you move into your home. Payment of your water, utilities and phone bills are also your personal responsibility.
After moving into your home, the Habitat Family Support Committee will maintain an on-going relationship with your family. This may include financial counseling and household maintenance education. |

Yakima Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity’s application process takes place ONCE A YEAR, for the communities in which we serve. Public notice is given through flyers and the media. A meeting is held where families are able to learn more about the program and pick up an application. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME A FAMILY CAN OBTAIN AN APPLICATION. The families that Habitat will build with for the next year are selected from this group of applicants. CLICK HERE for next application dates!
